We Are All Interconnected And Advocating For The Humanization Of Incarcerated Persons Is What Ties Us Together. -Adlynn Louidor

A Community- First Model

Founded in 2021, Bridging Borders With Inmates (BBI) is a community-based non-profit organization grounded in the belief that people impacted by incarceration have the right to dignity, safety, and a meaningful opportunity to rebuild their lives. Our work is informed by the understanding that release from custody does not equal freedom when individuals continue to face barriers to housing, employment, education, and community belonging. We exist to support people who are incarcerated, returning home, or at risk of criminalization, particularly youth and adults impacted by gang-related violence. Rooted in a community-first approach, BBI responds to cycles of harm by centering prevention, long-term support, and empowerment rather than punishment. Our work is embedded in neighbourhoods that have experienced systemic disinvestment and over-criminalization, including Jane and Finch, Regent Park, Orton Park, Scarborough, and Detroit. By working alongside individuals, families, and local partners, we aim to interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline, support pathways out of violence, and strengthen communities’ capacity to create safety, stability, and opportunity from within.

The People We Walk With

At Bridging Borders With Inmates, we support a range of individuals, including:

  • People who are currently incarcerated and need bail plans or release support, including help with planning for supervision, housing, and community connection upon release.
  • Individuals wrongfully convicted who face unique challenges reintegrating after release and need legal support, emotional support, and community resources to rebuild stability.
  • People preparing for release from jail or federal detention who benefit from planning for housing, employment, health care, and community support before they return home.
  • Formerly incarcerated individuals navigating reentry and reintegration, including supports for housing, employment, education, and community connection.
  • Youth and young adults affected by gang involvement or street-level violence, especially those seeking alternatives to criminalization and support in making new pathways forward.
  • Individuals at risk of deeper system involvement, such as young people facing school exclusion, frequent police contact, or early court involvement.
  • People working to exit cycles of violence, instability, or criminalization, including those reconnecting with family and community.
  • Families and loved ones of people who are incarcerated or returning home, who need support navigating emotional, social, and practical challenges.
  • Community members facing barriers related to systemic exclusion, such as discrimination in housing, employment, and access to services that help people stay connected and safe.
